Google Ads for Small Business: Is It Actually Worth the Spend?
By Koprio Team
Google Ads can bring a small business enquiries within hours of switching on. It can also quietly drain a few hundred pounds a month with nothing to show for it. Both happen all the time. Whether it is worth the spend for you comes down to your margins, your website and whether you can actually handle more work.
Your margin per customer. If a new customer is worth £2,000 to you, you can afford to spend a fair bit to win one. If your average sale is £15, the maths rarely works for search ads.
Your website. Ads send people to a page. If that page is slow, unclear or does not match what they searched for, you pay for the click and lose the person.
Your capacity. If you are already flat out, paying to generate more enquiries you cannot service is just buying yourself stress and bad reviews.
If all three line up, Google Ads is usually worth testing.
You need enquiries now, not in six months
A customer is worth enough to justify the cost per lead
You have room to take on more work
People are actively searching for what you do, for example "emergency locksmith Eastbourne" or "man and van Hailsham"
You have a decent page to send them to
Very thin margins on low value sales
No clear action for a visitor to take, no form, no phone number, no booking
You cannot handle more customers
Nobody searches for your service, so there is no demand to capture
Your website is broken or badly out of date
You are paying for two separate things: the clicks, paid to Google, and management, whether that is your time or a fee to someone else.
Click costs vary massively by industry. Many local service searches sit somewhere between 50p and £5 a click, with competitive sectors like legal and insurance far higher. You also need enough budget to gather data before you can judge it, usually a few hundred pounds over at least a month. Our guide to PPC management cost breaks the numbers down.
Conversion tracking set up, so you can see which clicks become enquiries
One strong landing page per thing you advertise
A clearly defined area so you are not paying for clicks 200 miles away
A budget you can sustain for at least three months without panicking
Ads work while you pay. SEO builds something that keeps working after you stop, but it takes months. Most small businesses start with ads for immediate enquiries and build SEO alongside for the longer term. We cover the choice in SEO vs PPC.
Ignore clicks and impressions. The numbers that matter are cost per enquiry and cost per sale. If you are spending £300 a month and winning two jobs worth £1,500 each, it is working. If you are spending £300 and getting clicks but no calls, something on the page or in the targeting is wrong.
Google Ads is worth the spend when your margins support it, your website converts, and you can take the work. It is a fast way to test demand and fill quiet periods. It is not a fix for a weak website or a business at capacity.
