Instagram vs Facebook for Business: Where Should You Actually Focus?

By Koprio Team

Both are owned by Meta, both can be run from the same place, and you can post to both at once. So in theory it is not a choice. In practice your time is limited, and doing one platform well beats doing two badly. Here is how to decide where that time goes.

The audiences are different

  • Facebook skews older on average. It is where a lot of people over 40 still spend time, and it is strong for local community: town groups, events, recommendations, Marketplace

  • Instagram skews younger, though it has broadened with age over the years. It is visual first and better for discovery, people finding you through Reels and search when they were not looking for you

Neither is small. The question is which one your customers actually use.

Which suits which business

  • Visual businesses: salons, cafes, florists, photographers, makers, interiors. Instagram first

  • Local services with an older customer base: roofers, gardeners, mobility, home care. Facebook first

  • Events, classes, community focused: Facebook first, for Groups and Events

  • Younger audience, trend led, or you want discovery: Instagram first

  • Most established local businesses: end up on both, with one as the priority

The case for starting with one

If you are stretched, pick the platform your customers use most and do it properly for three months. A consistent, well run single account beats two neglected ones. Add the second once the first is a habit.

Making them work together

You can post to both at once, but do not just fire identical content at each. Adjust:

  • Facebook captions can be a little longer and more informational

  • Instagram leans on the image or video, with a shorter caption

  • Reels can go to both, but Stories are more of an Instagram habit

  • Put events and community posts on Facebook, visual and discovery content on Instagram

Where Facebook still wins

Local town groups, Events, Marketplace, recommendations where people tag businesses in reply to a request, and simply reaching customers who never adopted Instagram.

Where Instagram wins

Discovery through Reels and search, visual brand building, a younger audience, and an active DM culture where enquiries often start.

The takeaway

It is not really Instagram versus Facebook, it is where your limited time goes first. Visual business or younger audience, start with Instagram. Older local customers, community and events, start with Facebook. Do one well, then add the other. When you run both, adapt the content rather than posting it twice.
