SEO Mistakes Small Businesses Keep Making (And How to Fix Them)
By Koprio Team
After looking at a lot of small business websites, the same problems come up again and again. Not obscure technical faults, just a handful of avoidable mistakes that quietly cap how much work the site brings in. Here are the ones worth fixing first, and how to fix them.
Pages that try to cover everything rank for nothing. If your services page lists eight services in equal weight, it competes weakly for all of them.
Fix: Give each main service its own page with its own search term. Let the services page be a hub that links out to them.
SEO takes months, not weeks. People give up at week three, right before the work would have started paying off, and conclude it does not work.
Fix: Plan for a three to six month horizon before judging results. Track leading signs like impressions and indexed pages in the meantime so you can see progress early.
For a local business this is the single biggest free lever, and it is often half filled in and never touched.
Fix: Complete every field, choose specific categories, add photos monthly, post updates weekly, and ask for reviews consistently. Our Google Business Profile guide has the full process.
Ten location pages that are the same paragraph with the town name swapped. A blog of 200 word posts that say nothing. Google sees straight through both.
Fix: Fewer pages, more substance. Only create a page if you have something genuinely useful to put on it.
Pages stuffed with the same phrase, awkward headings, sentences bent out of shape to fit a keyword. It reads badly and Google is well past rewarding it.
Fix: Write for the customer. Use the search term where it is natural, then forget about it and make the page genuinely helpful.
A slow site, broken links, pages Google cannot crawl, no mobile testing. All of it drags on rankings and none of it is visible unless you look.
Fix: Run a technical SEO audit once a year and after any big change. Fix speed and mobile first.
Pages sitting in isolation with nothing linking to them. Google struggles to find them and they get none of the authority the rest of the site has built.
Fix: Link related pages to each other with descriptive text. Every important page should be reachable in a couple of clicks from the home page.
Buying links, paying for hundreds of directory submissions, joining link schemes. At best it does nothing. At worst it gets you penalised.
Fix: Earn a few genuine local links: sponsorships, business networks, partners, useful content that other sites want to reference.
A page written three years ago with old prices and outdated information slowly slides down the rankings while fresher competitor pages climb past it.
Fix: Review your key pages once or twice a year. Update figures, add new information, improve anything thin.
No Google Search Console, no Analytics, no idea which searches bring people in or what they do next. You cannot improve what you are not measuring.
Fix: Set up Search Console and Analytics today. Check monthly. Focus on traffic and enquiries, not just ranking positions.
A single tradesperson in Seaford trying to rank for "plumber" nationally will lose to national directories every time.
Fix: Target "service plus town" and "near me" searches. Winning "boiler repair Seaford" is worth far more to you than ranking on page four for "plumber".
Most small business SEO problems come down to this list: unfocused pages, impatience, a neglected Google Business Profile, thin content, technical faults, no internal links, dodgy backlinks, stale pages, no tracking and targets that are too broad. Fix these and you are ahead of most of your local competition.
If you would rather have someone find and fix these for you, Koprio's SEO service starts with a free audit that covers every point above, then handles the work with monthly reporting on leads. Get in touch to book it.
